6th Kyu White This is worn by all novices, Junior and Senior.
5th Kyu Yellow Ukemiwaza i.e. Mae & Ushiro Korobi, Ushiro Ukemi, Migi & Hidari Yoko Ukemi, Mae Ukemi.

Tachiwaza: Kube Nage, Ashi Gake, Ko Uchi Makikomi, Tai Otoshi. L & R.

Ne Waza: Kesa Gatame, Kuzure Kesa Gatame. Escape from both.

Renzokuwaza: Technique 2s, to each technique. L & R.

Kaeshiwaza: Counter 1s, to each technique. L & R.

Randori: Demonstrate your Tachi, Renzoku and Kaeshiwaza on the move, L & R.

There is no waiting period from 6th to 5th Kyu however it is expected 2 - 3 months will be needed to learn the techniques to an acceptable standard. Students are required to complete all the above in a formal grading/promotion exam.
4h Kyu Orange Tachiwaza: Kata Seoi, Ryo Ashi Dori, Hiza Guruma, Uki Goshi, Obi Goshi, Eri Nage, O Soto Guruma (3 types), Te Hiza Sasae (2 types). L & R.

Newaza: Kata Gatame (2 types), Makura Kesa Gatame (2 types). From Tachiwaza. Move between all known holds whilst maintaining control of Uke.

Kaeshiwaza: Counter 1s, to each technique, including all previous Tachiwaza. L & R. Counter 2s, to each technique, including all previous Tachiwaza. L & R.

Randori: Demonstrate your Tachi, Renzoku and Kaeshiwaza on the move, L & R.

Renzokuwaza: Technique 3s to each technique, including all previous Tachiwaza.L & R.

Shiai: Show good fighting spirit within the contest rules against two opponents.

The waiting period from 5th to 4th Kyu is approximately 6 months. Students are required to complete all the above in a formal grading/promotion exam.
3rd Kyu Green Tachi Waza: Kata Nage, Ashi Guruma, Seoi Nage, Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi, O Guruma, Ko Soto Gake, Ko Tsuri Goshi, Koshi Guruma. L & R.

Kaeshiwaza: Counter 1’s to each technique. L & R.

Counter 2’s to each technique. L & R.

Counters 2 by 2 to ten techniques, five students choice. L & R.

Newaza: Ushiro Kesa Gatame, Mune Gatame and all previous, linked, and with control. Also performed from Tachiwaza.

Renzokuwaza: Technique 3’s to each technique. L & R.

Shiai: Show good fighting spirit within the contest rules against three opponents.

Randori: Demonstrate your Tachi, Renzoku and Kaeshiwaza on the move, L & R.

Han Sutemiwaza: No less than ten. Five students choice, five examiners choice. L & R.

Students are required to complete all the above in a formal grading/promotion exam. There is a waiting period of 8 months between 4th and 3rd Kyu.
2nd Kyu Blue Tachi Waza. Osoto Otoshi, Tsurikomi Goshi, Sode Tsurikomi Goshi, Ko Soto Gari, Uchi Ashi Gake, Hiki Tai, Uchi Ashi Sasae, Kata Ashi Dori. L & R.

Each finished with Atemi. Kaeshiwaza: Counter 1’s to each technique. L & R.

Counter 2’s to each technique, L & R.

Counters 2 by 2 to each Tachiwaza, L & R.

1 Sutemiwaza to each Tachiwaza. Demonstrate Soto Muso, Ushiro Goshi. Renzokuwaza: Technique 4’s to each technique, L & R.

Newaza: Yoko Shiho Gatame, Kuzure Yoko Shiho Gatame, plus all previous holds linked. Turnover Uke from crouched, prone and all fours position.

Sutemi Waza. Yoko Wakare, Uki Waza, Sumi Gaeshi.

Randori: Demonstrate your Tachi, Renzoku and Kaeshiwaza on the move, L & R.

Shiai: Show good fighting spirit within the contest rules against three opponents.

Han Sutemi Waza. No less than ten. Five students choice, five examiners choice. L & R.

Students are required to complete all the above in a formal grading/promotion exam. There is a waiting period of 12 months between 3rd and 2nd Kyu.
1st Kyu Brown Tachi Waza. Soto Gake, O Soto Gari, Sumi Otoshi, Harai Tsurikomi Ashi, Hiji Otoshi, Hane Goshi, Kata Guruma. L & R. Each finished with an Atemiwaza.

Tachi Kaeshiwaza: Counters 1 L & R. Counters 2 by 2. L & R. Sutemiwaza counter 1’s and 2’s to each Tachiwaza.

Tachi Newaza: From Tachi & Sutemi Waza, Kuzure Kami Shiho Gatame, Tate Shiho Gatame. Randori:

Tachi Renzokuwaza: Technique 4’s to each technique, L & R. Han Sutemi 2’s: No less than ten. Five students choice, five examiners choice. L & R. Sutemi 2’s: One to each technique.

Tachi Sutemiwaza: Tomoe Nage, Yoko Guruma, Tani Otoshi, Taware Gaeshi. Randori:

Tachi Shiai: Show good fighting spirit within the contest rules against three opponents.

Students are required to complete all the above in a formal grading/promotion exam. There is a waiting period of 18 months between 2nd and 1st Kyu. Brown belts are expected to be able to teach a class, safely, to a good standard and without supervision. Brown belts are expected to not only develop their own knowledge and experience of Budo, but to actively promote Zen Judo and its principles.
1st Dan Black Junior (Half) Black Belt. (Under 16 years).

Tachi Waza. All techniques from Yellow to Black, performed as per Zen style whilst moving.

Newaza: All techniques from Yellow to Black.

Kaeshiwaza: Counters, 1, 2, & 2 by 2. As required by examiner.

Renzokuwaza: Technique 5s to each technique. L & R.

Han Sutemi Waza: One to each technique as required by examiner.

Han Sutemi Renzokuwaza: Technique 3’s as required by examiner.

Sutemi Waza: Yoko Otoshi, Yoko Gake, Soto Makikomi, Ura Nage, Korobi Sutemi, Hane Makikomi.

Sutemi Kaeshiwaza. Counter 1 to each technique.

Sutemi Renzokuwaza: Technique 3s to each technique.

Randori:

Shiai: Minimum of 3 opponents.

Senior Black Belt.(Over 16 years) All the above plus:

Tachiwaza: Yellow to Black, performed as per Kodokan variations whilst moving.

Go no Sen No Kata: Twelve techniques.

Kansetsuwaza: Nine techniques.

Shimewaza: Twelve techniques.

Supplementary Techniques: Twelve.

There is a waiting period of 2 years as 1st Kyu before promotion to 1st Dan. No-one under the age of 16 years will be promoted to 1st Dan. No-one under 18 years will be promoted to 2nd Dan. All waiting times are approximate and are at the discretion of the Chief Instructor.
